A single charging dispenser that can serve a passenger sedan and a heavy-duty semi truck without separate infrastructure is now a reality. Finnish charging technology company Kempower has introduced the Mega Satellite Flex, a high-power charger capable of delivering up to 560 kW through the established CCS standard or up to 1.2 MW through the emerging Megawatt Charging System, known as MCS. The announcement came this week at the Unplug & Recharge event held alongside ACT Expo, where the unit is on display for operators and industry partners.
The significance lies less in raw power figures than in flexibility. Fleet operators, charge point owners, and site developers have spent years locked into a binary choice: build for cars using CCS, or build for trucks using proprietary or emerging high-power connectors, often at different locations entirely. The Mega Satellite Flex removes that constraint by letting a single unit switch between standards depending on what vehicle pulls up. Why Two Standards Matter Right Now
CCS, or Combined Charging System, has been the dominant fast-charging standard for passenger EVs across Europe and North America for roughly a decade. It was designed around the power needs of cars and light commercial vehicles, typically topping out in the hundreds of kilowatts. Heavy-duty trucks, however, carry battery packs many times larger and need to recharge on tight logistics schedules, sometimes during mandated driver rest periods measured in minutes rather than hours. That gap drove the development of MCS, a standard built specifically for megawatt-level charging, with connectors and cooling systems engineered to handle currents up to 3,000 amps in its full specification. The Mega Satellite Flex supports up to 1,500 amps for MCS and 700 amps for CCS, placing it well within practical deployment range for early truck charging corridors.
What It Means for Site Economics
Charging infrastructure is capital-intensive, and idle equipment is the enemy of return on investment. A charger that only serves trucks sits unused whenever no truck is present; the same is true in reverse for car-only equipment. By combining both capabilities in one dispenser, with a 5-meter CCS cable and a 2.7-meter MCS cable, Kempower is betting that mixed-use sites will see materially higher utilization than single-standard alternatives. The unit is also built to work with 800-volt vehicle architectures, an increasingly common design in newer EVs that allows faster charging without proportionally higher current, and it can be fitted with a payment terminal for public-access deployments.
Fitting Into Existing Networks
Perhaps the most practical detail is compatibility. The Mega Satellite Flex works within Kempower's existing distributed charging architecture, meaning operators who have already installed the company's power modules and satellite units can add the new dispenser without ripping out infrastructure. That matters for an industry still figuring out how much to invest in a standard, MCS, that remains in its early rollout phase globally. Kempower has set a North American and European sales launch for July 2026, giving the market over a year to plan deployments around truck corridors, distribution centers, and mixed-fleet depots where both passenger and heavy-duty charging demand are expected to grow in tandem.
